Apple Unveils New iTunes 11

Apple today unveiled an all new iTunes 11. Spoiler alert: it looks amazing.

“We created iTunes because we love music and we’re going back to our roots with an incredibly clean design that keeps your music at the forefront,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The new iTunes works seamlessly with iCloud, always keeping your entire library at your fingertips, and we’re adding great new features that make listening to your music more fun.”

The redesigned iTunes features a full-window interface on your Mac or PC that’s simpler and cleaner, always keeping your favorite content in front of you. The new library view makes it easier to view your music, TV shows and movies, allowing you to click on the category of content you want to browse and that’s all you will see. The expandable album view allows you to see track listings for an individual album, while letting you continue to browse your music library. The new search feature searches across your entire iTunes library, including music, movies and TV shows. The re-imagined MiniPlayer makes it easy to control your music with a small tool bar, you can skip to the next song or search for something new to play—all without having to open your library. Up Next is a fun new way to see what songs are coming up and queue songs or albums you want to hear next.

However, iTunes 11 will not be available until late October. Interesting, an iPad Mini event is allegedly planned for that month.

Twitter API Change Causes Tapbots to Stop Tweetbot for Mac Alpha

Twitter changed its API a earlier this month which caused mayhem among the 3rd party Twitter developers out there. Twitter is trying to kill off all 3rd party clients. While this may not happen immediately, it is bound to happen in the near future. Yesterday, Tapbots announced that it has pulled the public alpha of Tweetbot for Mac from its site due to the new API changes.

As some of you may have already noticed the download link for the Tweetbot for Mac alpha no longer works. Twitter’s latest API Changes means now we have a large but finite limit on the number of user tokens we can get for Tweetbot for Mac. We’ve been working with Twitter over the last few days to try to work around this limit for the duration of the beta but have been unable to come up with a solution that was acceptable to them. Because of this we’ve decided its best for us to pull the alpha.

Yes the alpha is no longer available, but the final version of Tweetbot for Mac is still planned to make a debut in the Mac App Store in the near future.

No NFC in iPhone 5

NFC in the an iPhone has been long rumored now, possibly since last year. The rumor is gaining traction again, but this time because it has been ruled out of the iPhone 5. Jim Dalrymple from LoopInsight, who is known to have deep connections within Apple, has given his signature “Yep” to the AnandTech article explaining how NFC will not be in the iPhone 5.

Brian Klug, Anand Lal Shimpi for AnandTech:

Given the primarily metal backside of the new iPhone, it’s highly unlikely that NFC is in the cards for this generation. In fact, given the very little space at top and bottom dedicated to those glass RF windows, you can almost entirely rule it out.

Yep.

So there you have it. No NFC in the new iPhone.

Jury Decides Samsung Infringed on Many of Apple’s Patents!

Apple and Samsung have been battling over patents and infringements for years now, but they recently just went to trial. We’ve heard some interesting tidbits come out of the case from Forstall, Cue, and Schiller. We have also seen some interesting prototypes of Apple products, which were pretty cool.

Judge Koh is currently reading through nearly 700+ questions the jury had to answer. However, for many of them the jury decided that Samsung infringed on most of Apple’s patents.

MacRumors is providing a great analysis of the whole thing.

Hints at Two Separate iPhone 5 and iPad Mini Events

When iMore broke the news about the September 12th Apple event, Jim Dalrymple from TheLoop confirmed it with his signature “Yep”. This time, John Gruber from DaringFireball added his thoughts about the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini.

I’m thinking it makes more sense for Apple to hold two events. First, an iPhone event, focused solely on the new iPhone and iOS 6. Then, the iPhone ships nine days later, and there’s another wave of iPhone-focused attention as the reviews come out. Then, in the first or second week of October, Apple holds its traditional “music event”, exactly along the lines of the events at which they’ve been debuting new iPods for the last decade.

In response to this, Dalrymple said, “Oh that Gruber is a smart fellow.” This hints at two separate iPhone and iPad Mini (+ iPod) events. It makes sense. We’ll see.

How to Create a CS6-Style Icon

This tutorial will show you how to create a Custom-Studio 6 logo, like the featured image. This guide will come complete with pictures, so you don’t have to scramble around. Keep in mind, if you want an image exactly like the one right here, you’ll have to use Adobe Photoshop CS6 to do it, though it is possible in other programs. This guide is mainly for Mac users. I’ll be making one for HalfPeeledApple, as I didn’t really have any ideas for anything else. So, let’s get started.

  1. First, you have to get the icon. You can just copy + paste the one I put up there, but if you want to do it on your own, you have to be on a Mac. Find the app in the Finder, click once, hit “Command + I” and you’ll see a small version of the icon. Click it, copy and paste it, and put it into Photoshop. If you did that, crop the image until you have whats below.

View the rest after the break.

Samsung Copies Apple Yet Again

A funny video spotted by Daring Fireball shows Samsung’s new store in Sydney, Australia. This store is just one block away from Apple’s store and looks very, very similar. When asked about the location of the Samsung’s store compared to Apple’s, they said:

“It didn’t even come into the equation when we were looking for a location.”

I think John Gruber sums up that video pretty well.

Apple? Never heard of them.

Facebook Rebuilds iOS App, Launches Today

Facebook’s iOS app is one of the slowest apps known to man kind. Maybe that’s because they used HTML5 for support across all platforms. Wrong decision. Well today, Facebook has rebuild their app to run faster and to support instant photo loading. Facebook claims the new update is twice as fast as the original.

Speed boosts are all throughout the app, but Facebook says the most notable are scrolling, launching the app, and photos loading. Also included is an in-app banner notification for when new info pops up.

Version 5.0 of the Facebook application will be available as a free update today in the App Store.
