Another Hidden Tethering App Sneaks onto App Store (Update x2)

Yet another application with hidden tethering capabilities has appeared on the App Store. This time around, it is in the form of a random number generator; a $4.99 generator, that is.

The app called iRandomizer Numbers developed by Shmoopi, LLC obviously allows you to tether various iOS devices to get an internet connection. iRandomizer features two simple fields: minimum and maximum. All you have to do is enter numbers 1984 and 31337 into the two text fields and let the app do its thing. It creates a wifi network, which then allows others to share the data from your phone.

The developer claims this app was only meant for his close friends and family members, hence the high price tag for a number generator.

“Reluctantly, I will admit that my application ‘iRandomizer Numbers’ does have a hidden tethering feature,” he wrote. “I say reluctantly because I didn’t plan on the feature being released. I designed the tethering functionality for my family and close friends not thinking it would be disseminated outside that circle. “

It is very, very likely that this application will be removed within 24 hours, so if you have never purchased any other tethering app before, this is your chance. We will update this article when the app is removed from the store.

Update: iRandomizer Generator has just been removed. It is unclear at this point if Apple removed it or if it was the developer. We’ll try to find out.

Update 2: I got in touch with the developer and he told me that Apple did in fact remove the application but they have not yet sent a reason as to why. Although it’s obviously, I’m still interested in what they say.

Apple Pulls Quickpick from App Store (Update)

Yesterday, we wrote an article about the app called “Quickpick” that pretty much took advantage of notification center in iOS 5. Well, turns out Quickpick was another one of those applications that slip past Apple reviewers, especially in the holiday rush.

Around 2:00 pm EST today, Apple pulled the application from their App Store. Along with being unavailable in the App Store, Apple has also removed the app from iCloud downloads, so you can not even re-download it from iCloud.

Once Apple releases iOS 5.1 (whenever that comes), Quickpick would no longer work, anyway. The app uses URL scheming, which Apple accidentally left open in iOS 5. They have, however, made it private in the new iOS 5.1 betas.

There was actually a few other fast app opening competitors that were previously available. They have also been pulled by Apple today. The developer of one of those competitor applications said on his Twitter account how frustrating the review process can be.

It’s very interesting how often apps slip by Apple and a few days later, they get pulled. I’m glad I purchased when I did. Tell us your thoughts on this in the comments below!

Become More Productive on iOS with Quickpick (Update)

A newly released app named “Quickpick – The Universal iOS Launcher” hit the iOS App Store yesterday and is currently climbing the top paid ranks. In short, Quickpick lets you set notifications for iOS 5′s notification center that use URL schemes to launch the given app.

Incase you are unfamiliar, notification center is new in iOS 5. It’s a shortcut to viewing all of the notifications on your device along with set stocks and weather. Notification center is quick and easy to access. That’s where this app comes into play.

Currently at number 52 in the top paid category, Quickpick is probably worth the $0.99 for most users. I purchased this last night when it made headlines and used it all today. Basically, Quickpick allows you to add notifications that won’t disappear once you click them.

The app has built in options for adding phone calls, opening websites, composing new mail, and sending text messages. If you don’t like any of those options, there is always the custom URL schemes. For example, entering “prefs:root=WIFI” in the link row will set a notification to open up your wifi settings. Another example would be setting a quick notification to open up the popular photo sharing app, Instagram. Yes, you can open apps, too. Simply enter “instagram://” into the link row. There are endless possibilities of custom URL schemes that you can set. You can search HandleOpenURL.com for link schemes to enter. Here are some popular ones that are pretty self explanatory:

  • fb://profile
  • twitter://post?message
  • fb://friends
  • fb://notifications
  • fb://feed
  • itms-apps://
  • maps://
  • sms://
  • music://
  • youtube://
  • itms-books://

Quickpick is one of those “why didn’t I think of that” ideas. It’s a great app that hasn’t been done before, and I guarantee it will improve how productive you are while using iOS. Overall, it’s definitely worth picking up.
