As 2011 comes to an end, TorrentFreak shares download figures for the most pirated video games this year.
In February, an advanced copy of Crysis 2 leaked onto the internet. EA and Crytek were very disappointed and they were worried of a pirate rush but they were wrong.
Whilst there was tens of thousands of people downloading a copy, the real rush came when the full version was officially released nearly hitting 4 million downloads by the end of the year. This named Crysis 2 on PC the most pirated game of 2011 beating popular First Person Shooters such as Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 and Dice’s Battlefield 3 but they weren’t far off.

On XBOX 360 the title of most pirated goes to XBOX’s exclusive Gear of War 3 which was released in September and had a total of 890,000 downloads. Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 came in not far behind placing second and third.

On the Nintendo Wii platform ‘Mario’ is usually top and this year is the same. Super Mario Galaxy 2 which was released in 2010, becomes the most pirated game on the Wii platform second year running. With 1,180,000 downloads in total it is just in front of Mario Sports Mix, which was pirated 1,090,000 times since February.

As you can see from the three tables below, PC games are by far the most downloaded titles, with on average more than three times as many of downloads compared to Xbox 360 and Wii releases. Overall, the number of downloads of the top titles in each category is slightly lower than last year. The gaming platforms that are not mentioned, such as the PS3, get very low downloads and aren’t worth including for that reason.
The data for these estimated download numbers is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.
